Muskingum University empties out in mid-May. The parking lots off Stadium Drive go from packed to empty in about seventy-two hours, and for anyone who moved here from a bigger town, the first summer feels like a mistake. It isn't. The village just shifts its center of gravity three blocks west, onto the National Road stretch of Main Street where John Glenn grew up, and the people who already live here spend June through August moving between the same six or seven addresses.
This post is for residents. If you have lived here through a summer, some of this is a reminder of what's actually on the July calendar. If this is your first summer in New Concord, treat it as a map of where the village keeps its pulse when campus is quiet.
Everything Worth Walking To Is On One Block
The stretch of West Main between the Village offices at 2 West Main and the John & Annie Glenn Museum at 72 West Main is maybe a two-minute walk end to end. Inside that walk you get the museum, the Village Hall, Scott's Diner, Chapman's Coffee House, Wally's Old Fashioned Pizza & Subs, and the Subway at 15 West Main. East Main picks up Creno's Pizza and, historically, Main Street Cafe and Johnson's Restaurant on the 30 and 41 East Main blocks. Dairy Duchess sits a short drive out, and it is where the summer softball crowd ends up around 8 p.m. on a weeknight.
That density matters. It's the reason a Saturday in July here does not require a car once you park it. And it explains why almost every dated summer event on the village calendar happens inside that walking radius.

Space Days 2026 lands on Monday, July 13 at 72 West Main Street, and the Beckett House Craft Show & Vendor Market is Saturday, July 18 at 1280 Friendship Drive. Muskingum University hosts Helen Welch and Friends on Thursday, July 23. Those three dates alone give you a walkable morning, a Saturday market, and a Thursday-night concert inside a two-week window, which is more programming than most villages this size manage in a full quarter.
Space Days Is A Bigger Deal Than The Name Suggests
If you have kids in the 9-to-12 age range, the museum's summer program is the one to book early. The 2025 edition ran two days with a rotating theme, and the John & Annie Glenn Museum hosted Space Days on Monday, July 14 and Tuesday, July 15 for ages 9–10 and 11–12, with a theme of "Electricity" that had students performing experiments on static electricity and simple circuits from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. The cost was $20 per student with a pizza lunch from Wally's Pizza, and each student received a book courtesy of Park National Bank.
That last detail is the tell. Space Days is not a museum program that happens to be in New Concord. It is a village program that happens to run out of the museum. Wally's caters the lunch. Park National, three blocks up the same street, buys the books. Registrations go through the Museum Association of East Muskingum at (740) 826-3305. If your child is aging into that window, the 2026 date to circle is Monday, July 13.
The museum itself is worth planning around this summer regardless. Admission runs $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and groups of ten or more, $5 for students, and free for children under six, with general visitation hours running May through October, Wednesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Costumed interpreters walk you through the main floor as if you were visiting in 1937 during the Great Depression or in 1944 during the war. If you have out-of-town guests coming through on the National Road corridor this summer, this is the stop that plays well across every age.
The Kitchen Question: Who Is Actually Open
The most common complaint from new residents is that they cannot find dinner in town. The honest answer is that most of the village's food is built around breakfast and lunch, not dinner, and knowing the schedule is half the battle. Here is the practical version:
- Scott's Diner. The village's most reliable weekday sit-down. Rated 4.7 of 5 on Tripadvisor with 46 reviews and ranked #1 of 5 restaurants in New Concord. Currently open only five hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plan accordingly. It is not a dinner spot.
- Chapman's Coffee House. The morning anchor. If you need a place to work, meet a contractor, or hand someone a set of keys, this is where those things happen in New Concord.
- Wally's Old Fashioned Pizza & Subs and Creno's Pizza. The two pizza options residents actually rotate between. Creno's sits on East Main; Wally's is the one that also caters the Space Days lunch.
- Dairy Duchess. Seasonal, walk-up, and the summer standby for youth sports nights.
- Subway at 15 West Main and the usual carry-out chains fill in the gaps.
If you want a full sit-down dinner in a dining room, plan to drive. That is not a knock on the village. It is a map of what dinner looks like inside a two-mile radius so you can stop being frustrated by it.
Beckett House Is Doing More Than People Realize
The Beckett House at 1280 Friendship Drive has quietly become the second engine of the summer, and it runs on a schedule that has nothing to do with Muskingum's academic year. The Beckett House Summer Kickoff Family Fun Day Cookout is set for Thursday, July 2 at 5 p.m., the Annual Craft Show & Vendor Market runs Saturday, July 18 starting at 9 a.m., and Foxes in Folklore lands at the New Concord Branch Library on Saturday, September 12.
Three events in ten weeks, all family oriented, all free or low cost, all outside the museum-and-campus axis. If you moved here recently and have not been to a Beckett House cookout, that is the one to try first. It is the closest thing the village has to an unforced community night.
Muskingum Doesn't Actually Go Dark
The campus is quiet, not closed. U.S. News & World Report ranks Muskingum #1 Best Value among Ohio universities for the regional Midwest and #2 among Ohio universities in Top Performers in Social Mobility. That kind of program keeps a summer footprint even when undergraduate enrollment is home for break, and the July 23 Helen Welch and Friends concert is a good example. It is a Thursday night, on campus, open to the public, and it draws the exact cross-section of residents, alumni, and Zanesville commuters that a village this size needs to keep its cultural venues staffed year round.
Muskingum was founded in New Concord in 1837 and emphasizes entrepreneurial and experiential learning on its campus, in the community, and around the world. The "in the community" piece is the part residents feel in July. If you have not walked the Stadium Drive campus loop on a summer evening, it is one of the more pleasant twenty-minute walks in the village.
What This Tells You About Living Here
The generic version of this article, on some other site, is a list of "top ten things to do in New Concord." That list will include the museum and stop there. What that list misses is the thing that makes summer here work: the anchors are close together, the calendar is published far enough in advance to plan around, and the people running the events (the Museum Association of East Muskingum, the Beckett House, the university's programming staff, the Board of Trade) are the same people you see at Chapman's on a Wednesday morning.
